I had to say something. The Daily Show is usually great and on-point about politics but everyone makes mistakes—and they made a mistake. I don’t know what is more distasteful: the joke itself, or the way the media is handling fan reaction to the joke.
Yes, we understand it’s comedy but it’s also prejudiced and further perpetuates ignorance when it comes to race issues in this country. It’s sad that a boy band’s fan base can understand that but the media who set societal standards can’t, and dismisses us as irrational teenage girls (x).
The fact is, we’re not upset because a member of our favorite band was the target of a joke. We’re upset because a Muslimwho has been the target of “terrorist” jokes for years now was associated with a multitude of violent radical Islamist terrorist groups on national television.
Zayn is someone we all care about as a member of our favorite band but more than that, he is a human being. Whether it’s Zayn Malik or a normal citizen on the street, people will say something when they recognize that it’s unjust. Zayn has a larger fan base and therefore more people are exposed to the prejudice, and are more willing to speak up about it. It’s the first time I’ve seen so many people talk about racism against Muslims in this way and on such a large platform. Good for us.
Found this gem in my phone from one of the concerts at Metlife on August 4th. Starts with Zayn’s high note, ends with another Zayn high note. All I need.
let’s talk about it
All he did was tweet the hashtag #FreePalestine. But that support means more than anything else in the world. He sees what’s going on. He sees the massacre and he knows he has a platform and he used it to speak up for what he knows is wrong. He knows that celebrities get HELL for showing even a semblance of support for Palestine because the world is so set on being against them. He KNOWS that he, like so many others will be deemed “anti-semitic” even though he’s said nothing about Judaism because suddenly being against the slaughter of innocent people means you’re against Judaism (which isn’t true by any means). He hates drama but he had the courage to type those words and accept what drama it may bring him. He KNOWS that Simon Cowell who formed his band and owns his record label gave hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Israeli Army and that there will probably be repercussions for him. Yet he still chose to type the words and press “Tweet”. I’m tearing up just writing this because I don’t think I’ve EVER been more proud of anyone. I’m so happy that he’s the type of idol I’ve chosen to support. He’s so brave and I’ll never forget this.
I don’t know if they leaked it themselves. They both have younger sisters who they know look up to them and I’m sure they wouldn’t want them seeing that. I really don’t think Zayn would want to leak that. Maybe Louis because I was sensing that he doesn’t really 100% enjoy things anymore and it was from his phone and I don’t know how anyone else would get it from there but still…the whole thing is a bit strange for me. The issue is not so much the weed, it’s the fact that Louis so recklessly recorded it.
I don’t think they’ll be banned from the United States. That’s a bit extreme. Miley Cyrus smokes weed publicly all the time and she’s fine. Celebrities get exceptions for everything. And I do think most people knew that they smoked but the fact that they recorded a video so blatantly is the problem. Do what you want with your life, but don’t publicize it, you know?
Yeah I know what you mean. There are many MANY fans who will stand behind anything the boys do, and I’m just not one of them. I get it, you smoke weed, lot’s of people do but that’s still not an excuse. Yes I will admit it was entertaining to watch the way drunk people are entertaining to watch but when you have people who look up to you, you can’t be so careless in recording things like that and making the it so obviously the focus of the whole thing. And Louis seemed like such an asshole in it. It’s a drug, you shouldn’t have recorded it, especially when there are people who look up to you, there are three other people in the band that this will effect and like you said people pay to see you.
It’s also kind of a bit scary because we all kind of assumed that “things” happened on tour but this is a complete conformation that they very much take part in that celebrity lifestyle. Even their body guard was using some code to confirm that they would have drugs in Chile. They can get whatever they want, whenever they want and when it comes to someone you care about, it can be a bit scary.
Admittedly, when I first saw the video I thought it was hilarious and I didn’t see the big deal. But after reading other people’s posts and things I can see the problem. In the end, it’s their lives and we don’t have a right to control it but Louis definitely should not have recorded it.
"Ugh I hate that band you like"
Yeah he has a little bit. And that’s great because he looked sickly before. This has nothing to do with the weight thing I just thought I would mention how badly I want to be his friend lol
Love those and I’ve said it a million times on twitter but I cannot WAIT to hear Zayn’s bridge in Strong live. It will be the highlight of the entire concert.
I thought I would share some of my saved pictures and captions. They all sit in a password protected file in my computer.
From a Japanese Magazine. Beautiful pictures.
If this doesn’t brighten up your day, I don’t know what will.
I think he would be really laid back and chilled out (and so I think he would need a girl who was the same). He would be content with hanging out at home or just going to a pub to just hang out with the people he cares about. He hasn’t had a girlfriend in a while and I really think he does know how to treat a woman. He’s a really open and compassionate person, so I think that would be a big part of his relationship. And he would treat her right, that’s the biggest thing. It wouldn’t be all about him, it would be about them together having fun. And I imagine there would be a lot of laughter.
